George Gratzer-4
I'm trying to typeset a book I wrote in 1999.

I get an error message:

and GoTo Error takes me to supp-pdf.mkii. Was this not present in 1999?

How do I go around  this?

Howdy,

How are you trying to compile that document? Do you have metapost output in that file? It looks like it's trying to load an MPS to PDF converter of some sorts.

Good Luck,

Re: 1999

George Gratzer-4
I just typeset with LaTeX. I have never knowingly used anything like metapost.
I'm a plain vanilla user.

This is a long shot, but do you have a log file lying around from a successful compilation from 1999? It might be constructive to compare that to the current console output.

One other thought; are you using pdfTeX? Were you using dvips back in 1999? That might account for the difference.

--------

Just a thought---you might be including eps graphics, eg, \includegraphics{x.eps}. That would work fint in latex+dvips+ps2pdf, but automatic conversion to .pdf by pdflatex might require you to omit the .eps extensions.

or the .aux  file from back then, when you last compiled it.

If you did, it may have been overwritten now.
But then just try again, so that any incompatibilities may have gone.

If you do still have an old .aux  then *rename it*  and run LaTeX again.
With any luck, it will compile OK, but without the references, etc.

> It might be constructive to compare that to the current console output.
>

Here's the thinking:

LaTeX loads supp-pdf.mkii  just in case you might need  metapost
support. It happens soon after the document's existing  .aux  file
has been read. Here's a .log snippet from one of my jobs:

>> (./237practical8.aux)
>> (/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/supp-pdf.mkii
>> [Loading MPS to PDF converter (version 2006.09.02).]
>> )

Things have changed quite a bit.
What worked in 1999, using stuff written into the .log file,
may not work now. Different stuff is written there.
Certainly  hyperref  has to do this kind of thing, depending
upon the driver being used.

So kill the old  .log  file before recompiling
--- actually better to keep and rename it, so you can test
the theory.

Renaming an old  .log  file is a good idea too, so you
can check for other differences.

This is a long shot, but do you have a log file lying around from a successful compilation from 1999?

or the .aux  file from back then, when you last compiled it.

One other thought; are you using pdfTeX? Were you using dvips back in 1999? That might account for the difference.

Here's the thinking:

LaTeX loads supp-pdf.mkii  just in case you might need  metapost
support. It happens soon after the document's existing  .aux  file
has been read. Here's a .log snippet from one of my jobs:

(./237practical8.aux)
(/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/supp-pdf.mkii
[Loading MPS to PDF converter (version 2006.09.02).]
)

Chris

Hope this helps,

Ross

This ancient local url.sty makes a good suspect.

If the error is back, then it's in the uncommented quarter, otherwise it's in the left commented quarter. Now test the first half of the faulty quarter and so on. Step by step you can narrow down the text body with the fatal statement.

If this does not work, because you always have the error, even when the text body consists of a simple "Hello world", then it must be some STY file and you have to start commenting STY files… with implications like now undefined commands or macros.

That file was already present in TeX Collection 2009.

Howdy,

Not only that, it's NOT the url.sty from the distribution, it's in the same directory as the document (./url.sty).

Good Luck,

That's what I was going to suggest, except that I start with "Forget
it" and, if it works, add sections one at a time. (No bisection for
me. I know, I know.)

Problem resolved: the style file the book used was made for Textures! I replaced it with thew new one, and it worked.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Howdy,

I am continually amazed that documents I created using a personal, custom format back in the late 1980s can still be typeset once I recreate the format file with the latest software. Long live TeX! :-)

Oh... and documents that were created back then by Word, etc., are dead forever. :-(

Good Luck,

Not if you had kept your antique machine with Word for Mac. ;-)))

Or if you had transferred said documents to OOo---and done Print >
Save As PDF just in case---before junking your old Mac.

But I am sure glad I got started on LaTeX when I did i.e. after losing
irremediably several chapters of a long_document.doc.

Long live TeX!  (No joke.)
