Problem after TeXLive-2020 upgrade

Vinay K. Ingle
Hello,

I installed TeXLive 2020 today. The installation was successful. When I processed an existing file (that worked fine under 2019 distribution), I received the following error:

! LaTeX Error: File `pdftexcmds.sty' not found.

After switching back to 2019 distribution, the compilation is fine. Is my 2020 distribution damaged?

I am using macOS Catalina (10.15.5) on MBP (Late=2013).

Thanks.

Vinay K. Ingle

I recommend that you use TeX Live Utility to update TeX Live 2020 to its current state. The file you need is in the distribution afterward, since

kpsewhich pdftexcmds.sty

returns

/usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex/generic/pdftexcmds/pdftexcmds.sty

on my machine.

Howdy,

How did you install TeX Live 2020? Did you use the MacTeX installer package? Did you update using TeX Live Utility (or tlmgr directly)?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for a quick reply. When I started TeX Live utility (version 1.36), it reported "No Updates Available". Also,
kpsewhich pdftexcmds.sty
returned nothing. However, when I looked into the
/usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex/generic/pdftexcmds/
directory, I noted two files: pdftexcmds.lua and pdftexcmds.sty. So the necessary file is in the distribution.

Is there a problem with proper alias?

Thanks again.

Re: Problem after TeXLive-2020 upgrade

Vinay,

You say that you installed MacTeX-2020 just recently, and then you say that TeX Live Utility reported "no updates available". Actually, there would be LOTS AND LOTS of updates of a recent MacTeX-2020, namely all released between last April and today. In fact, just this morning there were many new updates.

I suspect you did "check for updates" in TeX Live Utility, which is only a check if there is a new version of TeX Live Utility. Please read the instructions in the TeX Live Utility Help menu and do a real update of your TeX system.

Re: Problem after TeXLive-2020 upgrade

MacOSX-TeX mailing list
It is possible that Vinay ran TeX Live Utility after he went back to MaxTeX-2019 and there are no more updates to that version.

Thanks Richard. I reinstalled MacTex-2020 and then started the TLU. It then updated 400+ packages, which completed successfully.
Now when I compile the old file, I do not get the previous error but it reports errors in .png files, something like

Runaway argument?
"Fnl_s1a.png" \edef \Gin@ext {\Gin@sepdefault \filename@ext }\ifx \Gin@ext \ETC
.
./2020SM1_EECE3468_Final_Exam_solutions.ltx:74: Paragraph ended before \@tempa
was complete.
<to be read again>
                   \par
l.74

Again, this file used to compile correctly before.

Also, now the LaTeXit app does not work properly (no output but no errors either).

Re: Problem after TeXLive-2020 upgrade

Vinay,

Excellent.

I'm going to let someone else on the list take over on the png problem. They will probably need your source file to explain what is wrong.

Please go to the LaTeXiT site, easily found using Google, and speak to the author about LaTeXiT problems.

Excellent.

I'm going to let someone else on the list take over on the png problem. They will probably need your source file to explain what is wrong.

Please go to the LaTeXiT site, easily found using Google, and speak to the author about LaTeXiT problems.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for a quick reply. When I started TeX Live utility (version 1.36), it reported "No Updates Available". Also,
kpsewhich pdftexcmds.sty
returned nothing. However, when I looked into the
/usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex/generic/pdftexcmds/
directory, I noted two files: pdftexcmds.lua and pdftexcmds.sty. So the necessary file is in the distribution.

Is there a problem with proper alias?

Thanks again.

Howdy,

Can you create a minimal example file along with a .png file that shows this problem on your system? It's difficult to analyze without a log file to look at and an example to work with.

PS: If you ever placed packages in your personal tree (root at ~/Library/texmf) or texmf-local tree please remove them and test again.

Good Luck,

Howdy,

One more thing... make sure you typeset using pdflatex (or xelatex) and NOT latex since it can't handle .png graphics.

I just had this problem

Hidden in the help FAQ is this:
(Q) : I did install LaTeX the way described, but LaTeXiT seems not to be functional either.
(A) : If you have installed TeXShop, then LaTeXiT, then LaTeX, the paths of LaTeXiT may point to a pdflatexc of TeXShop that is not sufficient. Just try before to remove LaTeXiT's Preferences (~/Library/Preferences/fr.chachatelier.pierre.LaTeXiT.plist). You can also try to set by hand the paths in the "composition" pane of the LaTeXiT's preferences.

This bit worked for me
 remove LaTeXiT's Preferences (~/Library/Preferences/fr.chachatelier.pierre.LaTeXiT.plist

Thanks Elliot.

I removed ~/Library/Preferences/fr.chachatelier.pierre.LaTeXiT.plist file and restarted LaTeXit but still has the same behavior. Nothing shows on the top window. Even if I revert back to 2019 distribution, I get the same behavior.

Package: graphics 1996/10/31 v1.0c Standard LaTeX Graphics (DPC,SPQR)

in your log file. That means you have a interfering geometry and graphic(x) packages in your personal tree.

PS: I had to change the file name of the supplied png graphic to match what is required. Once that was done there was no problem typesetting.

Good Luck,

Re: Problem after TeXLive-2020 upgrade

Vinay K. Ingle
Hi Herb,

Thanks for noticing it. I removed those files (also from other locations) and there were no typesetting problems either for the minimal or the original file. I am still perplexed that there was no such issue until the TL2020 upgrade. I am bracing for similar problems in other files but at least I know where to look for to solve them. This also solved my issue with LaTeXiT.

Thanks again for your help.

Howdy,

There are many internal changes in packages as you go from year to year and even during the active year. Many packages, especially things that are used quite universally like the geometry and graphicx packages, depend upon other packages so having an old version active may not work with the updates to other packages. In general you shouldn't be keeping copies of packages supplied by the distribution in your personal tree since they will not get updated when the distribution is updated.
